What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use place value to locate decimal values on a number line. They decide which values are greater, less, or equal and arrange several values in order.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students place a decimal accurately between labeled benchmarks and explain its position using place value. They compare and order values, including equivalent decimals such as 6.2 and 6.200.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think the number with more digits is greater, so they choose 4.125 over 4.8. They may misalign decimal points or treat trailing zeros as changing a value.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Plot 12.305 on a number line from 12.30 to 12.40, then order 12.35, 12.305, and 12.053 from least to greatest.

Ways to Teach It
Use decimal cards and a floor number line; students place 3.047, 3.4, 3.405, and 3.45, then justify each position.
Prompt students to explain whether 8.09 or 8.090 is greater, using a place-value chart or expanded form as evidence.
Play Decimal War with number cards; partners build numbers to the thousandths, compare them, and keep the greater number.
Compare race times recorded to the thousandth of a second, then rank the runners from fastest to slowest.
