What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students locate decimals through the hundredths on number lines. They compare two decimals using place value and symbols, then arrange several decimals from least to greatest or greatest to least.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students accurately place decimals on labeled number lines. They order several decimals and use <, >, or = correctly, explaining comparisons with tenths and hundredths.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think the decimal with more digits is always greater, so 0.58 must exceed 0.6. They may also reverse tenths and hundredths or treat 0.4 and 0.40 as different values.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Draw a number line from 0.3 to 0.5, plot 0.36, 0.39, and 0.4, then order them and complete 0.4 ___ 0.39.

Ways to Teach It
Give students hundred grids to shade 0.37, 0.5, and 0.62, then place matching cards on a floor number line.
Ask, “Which is greater, 0.6 or 0.58, and how does place value prove it?” Students write two sentences.
Play Decimal War with number cards, where partners build decimals to the hundredths and the greater decimal wins each round.
Give students store prices such as $1.25, $1.09, and $1.50 to order from least to greatest cost.
