What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students place numbers up to 100 on a number line. They arrange numbers from least to greatest or greatest to least and compare pairs using <, >, or =.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students accurately place a number between labeled tens on a number line. They order several numbers and compare two numbers by using tens, ones, and the symbols <, >, or =.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may compare the ones digits first, so they think 29 is greater than 41. They may reverse digits, misuse comparison symbols, or place numbers incorrectly between labeled tens on a number line.
How to Assess It
- Give students a number line marked by tens and the numbers 38, 46, and 61. Ask them to plot the numbers, order them least to greatest, and write one comparison using < or >.

Ways to Teach It
Students place number cards on a floor number line from 0 to 100, then rearrange selected cards from least to greatest.
Ask students to explain in two sentences which is greater, 47 or 74, using tens and ones as evidence.
Play Number War with two-digit cards; partners compare each pair, say the correct symbol, and keep the greater card.
Use classroom attendance totals to compare two days, order three days, and place each total on a 0 to 100 line.
