What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students locate whole numbers on labeled number lines and arrange sets from least to greatest or greatest to least. They compare two numbers using <, >, or = and explain using the first place where the digits differ.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student places numbers accurately between labeled benchmarks, even when the exact values are not marked. The student orders a set correctly and explains a comparison using the first place where the digits differ.

Common Misconceptions

Students may compare digits without checking their place, or assume the number with the largest single digit is greater. They may misread number-line intervals or place a number directly on the nearest labeled benchmark. Some confuse the direction of < and >.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: Plot 245,000 and 372,000 on a number line from 200,000 to 400,000 marked every 50,000. Then order 245,000, 254,000, and 205,400 from least to greatest.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Mark a floor number line with tape; students place six-digit number cards, then move cards until the class agrees on each position.

  2. Ask, “Which is greater, 408,900 or 409,080, and which digit settles it?” Students write, then defend their reasoning to a partner.

  3. Play Number Battle: pairs draw six digit cards, build the greatest possible number, and score a point for the larger number.

  4. Use Florida city populations; students rank five cities, compare two populations, and sketch each value on a scaled number line.
