What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students read, write, compare, order, and round whole numbers using place-value relationships. They explain a digit’s value and represent numbers in standard, word, and expanded forms.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can read, write, compare, order, and round large whole numbers. The student can explain that each place is ten times the value of the place to its right.

Common Misconceptions

Students may read each digit separately or confuse a digit with its value. They may also think moving a digit one place changes its value by one, or round using the wrong neighboring digit.

How to Assess It

Give students 472,638 and ask them to write it in expanded form, name the value of 7, and round to the nearest ten thousand.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Build six-digit numbers with digit cards on a place-value mat, then move one card left or right and state its new value.

  2. Ask students to explain in writing how the value of 6 differs in 65,240 and 26,504.

  3. Play Greatest Number by drawing six digit cards and arranging them to make the largest or smallest possible number.

  4. Compare city population numbers, order them from least to greatest, and round each to a chosen place.
