What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students read, write, build, and break apart numbers from 1,000 to 9,999. They explain how a digit's value depends on its place and use standard, word, and expanded forms.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given 4,306, a student identifies 4 thousands, 3 hundreds, 0 tens, and 6 ones. The student writes 4,306 as 4,000 + 300 + 6 and explains the zero placeholder.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat a digit as its face value, saying the 6 in 6,245 means 6 rather than 6,000. They may ignore zero placeholders or place digits in the wrong columns.
How to Assess It
- Give an exit ticket: For 6,042, label each digit's value, write the expanded form, and explain what the zero shows.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs base-ten blocks and a place-value mat; call out 2,417, then have them build it and record its expanded form.
Ask how the value of 5 changes from 5,208 to 2,580; students write two sentences, then compare answers with a partner.
Play Place-Value Draw: students draw four digit cards, make a number, and earn a point for naming each digit's value correctly.
Show a stadium attendance of 7,406; students explain what each digit means and rewrite the number in word and expanded forms.
