What Students Need to Do
- Students build and break apart four-digit numbers in several equivalent ways. They use base-ten objects, drawings, and equations to show how thousands, hundreds, tens, and ones can be regrouped.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can show 3,462 as 3 thousands, 4 hundreds, 6 tens, and 2 ones. The student can regroup it, such as 34 hundreds, 6 tens, and 2 ones, and prove both forms are equal.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may name a digit instead of its value, saying the 4 in 4,352 means 4 rather than 4,000. They may ignore zero as a placeholder or think regrouping changes the number.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Show 4,206 in two different ways using a drawing and two equations. Include one decomposition that is not expanded form.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs base-ten blocks and a number card, then have them build the number and trade one unit for smaller units.
Ask students to explain why 2,450 and 24 hundreds plus 5 tens name the same amount.
Play a matching game with four-digit numeral cards, base-ten drawings, expanded expressions, and regrouped expressions.
Use a store inventory of 1,325 items, then record the total as boxes of 1,000, packs of 100, bundles of 10, and singles.
