What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students build a two-digit number, then break it into tens and ones in more than one way. They show each way with materials, a drawing, and an equation.
What Mastery Looks Like
- For 46, a student can show 4 tens and 6 ones, then trade a ten to show 3 tens and 16 ones. They draw both models and write 46 = 40 + 6 and 46 = 30 + 16.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may read 42 as 4 + 2 instead of 40 + 2. They may think a number has only one tens-and-ones form. When trading one ten for 10 ones, they may change the total by mistake.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Show 52 two ways, including one way that does not use 5 tens. Draw each model and write an equation for each.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs bundled and loose straws; call 37, then have them build it, trade one bundle for ten straws, and record both equations.
Have students draw and answer the prompt: How can 28 have 1 ten and 18 ones while staying equal to 28?
Play Match the Number with cards showing numerals, block pictures, and equations such as 43 = 30 + 13.
Use dimes and pennies to show a 34-cent price, then exchange one dime and record the new tens-and-ones equation.
