What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students build a three-digit number with base-ten materials, sketch it, and match each model to an equation. They regroup a hundred as 10 tens or a ten as 10 ones to show different forms of the same number.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given 426, a student can show 4 hundreds, 2 tens, and 6 ones, then regroup it as 3 hundreds, 12 tens, and 6 ones. The student labels each model and writes a matching equation, such as 426 = 300 + 120 + 6.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may write 243 as 2 + 4 + 3 instead of 200 + 40 + 3. They may think trading one hundred for 10 tens changes the number, or that only one decomposition is correct.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Show 372 in two different ways using quick drawings and equations. Require one way other than 3 hundreds, 7 tens, and 2 ones.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs base-ten blocks and number cards; students build 243, trade one hundred for 10 tens, and record both equations.
Students answer the prompt, Show two ways to make 326 and explain why both have the same value.
Play Trade It: students roll three digit dice, build the number, then earn a point by showing a different decomposition.
Use 154 pencils to model one sealed box of 100, five packs of 10, and four loose pencils, then regroup the supply.
