What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students split a fraction or mixed number into different groups of equal-sized fractional parts. They represent each split with fraction pieces, a labeled drawing, and a matching equation.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can show 7/4 as 1/4 + 6/4, 3/4 + 4/4, and other correct sums. The student can explain why every addend uses fourths and why each total remains 7/4.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may change denominators when splitting, add denominators, or treat 7/4 as seven pieces of any size. They may drop the whole-number part of 1 3/4 or write 1 + 3/4 without connecting 1 to 4/4.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Show 7/4 as sums of fourths in two different ways. Draw a bar model for each equation and label every part.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs seven one-fourth fraction tiles; have them make three groupings, then trace each grouping and write its equation.
Ask, “Is 1 + 3/4 an allowed decomposition of 7/4?” Students write whether 1 should be renamed and justify with a model.
Play Fraction Split: draw a target card like 11/6, choose one numerator from 1 to 10, and write the second addend in sixths.
Sketch seven quarter-cup scoops of oats, group the scoops two different ways, and write equations showing the total amount.
