What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify the value of a digit based on its place. They explain that moving it left makes its value ten times greater, while moving it right makes its value one-tenth as great.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can state that the 7 in 7,000 is worth ten times the 7 in 700. They can use place-value language and multiplication or division by 10 to explain each change.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may name the digit instead of its value, saying a 4 is worth 4 in every place. They may add or subtract 10 instead of multiplying or dividing by 10, or reverse the direction of the change.
How to Assess It
- Give this exit ticket: “A 6 has a value of 600. What is its value after moving one place left? One place right? Explain each change.”

Ways to Teach It
Use a floor place-value chart. Students move a digit card left or right, then announce its new value and factor of change.
Ask, “How does the value of 5 change from 5,000 to 500?” Students write an equation and explain the change.
Play Place-Value Switch. Show a number, circle one digit, call “left” or “right,” and award points for its correct new value.
Compare attendance figures such as 6,000 and 600, then discuss how moving the 6 changes the size of the crowd.
