What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use place-value models, drawings, or number lines to combine and compare decimal quantities through hundredths. They explain how tenths and hundredths are regrouped.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students model and solve decimal sums and differences accurately. They align place values, regroup when needed, and use estimation to check whether an answer makes sense.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may line up the last digits instead of matching place values. They may treat 4.5 as smaller than 4.27 because it has fewer digits. Regrouping across the decimal point can also cause errors.
How to Assess It
- Give this exit ticket: Solve 12.4 minus 3.76 using a labeled place-value drawing, then explain why 12.4 can be written as 12.40.

Ways to Teach It
Build 3.45 and 1.78 with base-ten blocks, treating a flat as one, then combine and regroup to find the sum.
Discuss: Why must decimal points line up when finding 8.6 plus 2.47, and what does the empty hundredths place mean?
Play Decimal Target: draw two number cards, choose addition or subtraction, and score a point if the result is closest to 10.
Give students a store menu and $20, then have them find the cost of two items and the change they should receive.
