What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students estimate products and quotients involving multi-digit decimals through hundredths. They round strategically and use place value to explain an answer's size and check whether it is reasonable.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student chooses useful compatible numbers, such as changing 24.8 ÷ 5.1 to 25 ÷ 5. The student explains why the quotient is near 5 and rejects answers with an unreasonable place value.

Common Misconceptions

Students may assume multiplication always makes a number larger and division always makes it smaller. They may move the decimal point by a memorized rule or accept an estimate with the wrong magnitude.

How to Assess It

Give this exit ticket: Estimate 23.78 × 4.9 and 46.2 ÷ 1.8. Show the rounded or compatible numbers used, then explain why each estimate is reasonable.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Build a 16-by-24 rectangle with grid tiles to model 1.6 × 2.4, then compare 3.84 with the estimate 2 × 2.

  2. Ask: Which estimate is better for 18.72 × 6.1, 19 × 6 or 20 × 6? Defend your choice.

  3. Play Estimate Match by pairing decimal expression cards with estimate cards, then have partners justify each match using place value.

  4. Estimate the cost of 2.75 pounds of apples at $4.89 per pound, then decide whether $15 is enough.
