What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students estimate multi-digit multiplication and division problems by rounding factors, dividends, or divisors and choosing compatible numbers. They use place value to explain their estimates and judge whether calculated answers make sense.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student chooses useful rounded or compatible numbers and gives a sensible estimate for a multi-digit product or quotient. They explain the estimate with place-value language and use it to reject an unreasonable answer.

Common Misconceptions

Students may round to the wrong place or round every digit instead of the whole number. They may treat an estimate as exact or accept an unreasonable quotient without checking its size.

How to Assess It

Give this exit ticket: “Estimate 612 × 47 and 3,184 ÷ 8. Show the rounded or compatible numbers you used.”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Use place-value disks to model 1,248 ÷ 6, then record partial quotients and a compatible-number estimate.

  2. Ask, “Which better estimates 398 × 21: 400 × 20 or 400 × 21?” Students defend a choice in writing.

  3. Deal digit cards to build multiplication or division problems; partners round, estimate, and earn a point when answers are reasonable.

  4. Estimate how many buses are needed for 1,186 students if each holds 48, then explain why the quotient must round up.
