What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students model equal groups and arrays to find products up to 144. They connect each multiplication fact to its related division facts. They explain how multiplication and division undo each other.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can represent a fact with equal groups, an array, or a number line. They can use 8 × 12 = 96 to state 96 ÷ 8 = 12 and 96 ÷ 12 = 8.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may reverse the dividend and divisor or assume division is commutative. They may think dividing by zero is allowed or confuse zero divided by a number with dividing by zero.
How to Assess It
- Give this exit ticket: Draw a model for 8 × 12, find the product, and write the two related division equations.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs 48 counters and ask them to build every possible equal-row array, then record the matching multiplication and division equations.
Ask students to explain in writing how knowing 7 × 8 helps them solve 56 ÷ 7.
Play a card-matching game where students pair multiplication equations with products and related division equations.
Present 96 chairs and ask students to find different equal-row arrangements, then write an equation for each arrangement.
