What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students recall products for whole-number factor pairs up to 12. They use each multiplication fact to state related division facts without counting one by one.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student answers mixed multiplication and division facts accurately within a few seconds. The student can use 6 × 8 = 48 to state both related division facts.

Common Misconceptions

Students often confuse nearby products, such as 6 × 7 and 6 × 8. They may reverse division facts or assume division can be switched like multiplication. Some still rely on fingers or skip-counting.

How to Assess It

Give a 60-second exit ticket with 7 × 8, 12 × 6, 9 × 4, 56 ÷ 7, 72 ÷ 6, and 36 ÷ 9. Check for six correct answers without counting marks.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs number cards and counters, then have them build an array and write the four related multiplication and division equations.

  2. Ask students to explain in writing how knowing 8 × 7 helps them solve 56 ÷ 8.

  3. Play Multiplication War with cards numbered 1 through 12, with the first student to state the product keeping both cards.

  4. Use a dozen-egg carton prompt: Find the eggs in 7 cartons, then divide 84 eggs equally among 7 cartons.
