What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students quickly answer basic addition and subtraction combinations involving numbers through 20. They connect related facts and retrieve answers from memory instead of counting each time.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student answers a shuffled set accurately and promptly without counters, drawings, or finger counting. Given 9 + 6 = 15, the student quickly states both related subtraction equations.

Common Misconceptions

Some students count every fact on their fingers, which slows recall and causes off-by-one errors. Others reverse subtraction order or fail to connect 15 - 8 with 8 + 7.

How to Assess It

Show 12 shuffled fact cards, including 8 + 7, 15 - 8, 9 + 9, and 18 - 9. Record answers not given correctly within four seconds.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Build 15 with two-color counters, split it into 8 and 7, then record all four equations in the fact family.

  2. Write and answer: How does knowing 8 + 7 help you solve 15 - 8 without counting?

  3. Play Fact Family Memory with equation cards, keeping pairs such as 9 + 6 and 15 - 9 when both answers are known.

  4. Set out 18 pencils, hide 7 under a cup, and have students name the missing amount and related addition fact.
