What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students combine groups and find missing parts or amounts left, using numbers through 20. They use an addition fact they know to solve a related subtraction problem.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students solve accurately using objects, drawings, counting strategies, or known facts. They can write a related addition fact to explain a subtraction answer.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may subtract the smaller number from the larger number without considering the story. They may also miss that the same three numbers form related addition and subtraction equations.
How to Assess It
- Give this exit ticket: “Mia had 13 stickers and gave away 5. Write a related addition fact, then find how many remain.”

Ways to Teach It
Build 14 with linking cubes, hide 6 under a cup, find the missing part, and write two related equations.
Ask, “How can 7 + 6 = 13 help you solve 13 − 7?” and have students explain with words or drawings.
Give pairs fact-family triangle cards and have students race to write the four equations made by the three numbers.
Set up 15 classroom pencils, remove 7 for a supply bin, and have students find and explain how many remain.
