What Students Need to Do

Students find totals and differences within 100 using equations, drawings, objects, or number-line jumps. They use the same three numbers to connect an addition equation with its related subtraction equations.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student solves problems within 100 accurately and shows a clear strategy. Given 38 + 24 = 62, the student can use 62 - 24 = 38 to check the answer.

Common Misconceptions

Students may add ones correctly but forget to regroup ten ones as one ten. They may subtract the smaller digit from the larger digit, regardless of place or order. Some do not recognize that addition and subtraction equations can use the same three numbers.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: Solve 46 + 27, then write and solve the two related subtraction equations. Show one drawing or number-line jump.

   Have students build 36 + 27 with base-ten blocks, combine the pieces, then remove 27 to check the total.

   Ask students to explain in writing how knowing 42 + 19 helps them solve 61 - 19.
