What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students make sense of story situations with one or two changes. They choose addition or subtraction for each step, calculate within 100, and state the answer with a label.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student identifies what is known, what is unknown, and which operation fits each step. They solve accurately, show equations or a model, and label the final answer.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may combine every number they see, even when subtraction is needed. They may solve only the first step, reverse subtraction order, or omit the answer label.
How to Assess It
- Give this exit ticket: “Mia has 35 beads. She gives away 12, then gets 18 more. How many beads does she have now?” Ask for equations and a labeled answer.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs 60 counters and story cards, then have them act out each event and record an equation after every step.
Ask, “How do you know whether to add or subtract?” Students explain using the action in a sample story.
Play Solve and Swap: students solve a story card, trade with a partner, and check each other’s equations and labels.
Use a classroom supply order: students find totals after adding new pencils and subtracting pencils given to groups.
