What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students solve real-world problems by adding or subtracting lengths measured in the same unit. They decide which operations to use and complete one or two steps.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students choose addition or subtraction for each step and show their work with equations, drawings, or number lines. They solve accurately and label the answer with the given unit.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may add when a problem asks for the difference, or subtract when finding a combined length. They may ignore a second step, drop the unit label, or mix measurements from different objects.
How to Assess It
- Use this exit ticket: “A ribbon is 32 centimeters long. Mia cuts off 9 centimeters, then adds 14 centimeters. How long is it now?”

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs rulers and paper strips, then have them measure, join, cut, and compare strips to answer two-step question cards.
Ask students to write and solve a story problem using lengths of 18 centimeters, 7 centimeters, and 5 centimeters.
Play a card game where students draw length cards and operation cards, then calculate the new length and check with a partner.
Measure two classroom shelves in inches, then ask how much longer one is and their combined length.
