What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students change lengths, weights, capacities, and time measures into equivalent units within the same measurement system. They decide whether to multiply or divide, then use converted values in problems with more than one step. They label every result with the correct unit.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student identifies the needed conversion facts and chooses the correct operations. They show each conversion, complete all steps accurately, and label the final answer with the correct unit.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often multiply for every conversion, even when changing to a larger unit. They may reverse conversion facts, combine measurements before using the same unit, or omit unit labels.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: A 3-yard ribbon has pieces of 28 inches and 17 inches cut off. How many inches remain? Show each step.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs a yardstick, rulers, and string to measure, cut, and compare lengths using feet and inches.
Ask students to explain why converting 4 feet to inches requires multiplication, while converting 48 inches to feet requires division.
Play conversion relay with cards showing equivalent measurements, then have teams solve a two-step problem using each matched pair.
Plan drinks for a class picnic by converting cups to quarts, then calculate how many containers are needed. Recombine students' pictures
