What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students convert measurements between systems, such as miles and kilometers or pounds and kilograms. They use a given conversion relationship, calculate the new value, and include the correct unit.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students choose the correct conversion relationship and set up a proportion or conversion factor with matching units. They calculate accurately, label the answer, and check that its size makes sense.

Common Misconceptions

Students often multiply when they should divide, or reverse the conversion factor. They may compare numbers without considering that the units differ. Some round too early and produce inaccurate results.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: Using 1 inch = 2.54 centimeters, convert 42 inches to centimeters. Show the equation and explain why the result is reasonable.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Measure one cup of water, pour it into a metric graduated cylinder, then compare the measured milliliters with a conversion-factor calculation.

  2. Ask: A road sign says 80 kilometers to town; about how many miles is that, and how do you know?

  3. Give pairs conversion cards, such as 3 miles and 4.83 kilometers, and have teams match them and defend one calculation.

  4. Have students convert package weights from ounces to grams, then decide which of two differently labeled products is heavier.
