What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use tables, diagrams, or equations to find equivalent ratios and rates. They calculate amounts for one unit and use those values to compare situations. They also convert measurements within one system before solving.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students find missing values in ratio tables and calculate unit rates with correct units. They compare recipes, prices, speeds, or lengths and explain their choice. They convert measurements before comparing when needed.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may reverse the order of a ratio or attach the wrong unit to a rate. They may add the same amount to both terms instead of multiplying both by the same factor. They may compare values before converting measurements to the same unit.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: A 12-ounce drink contains 3 ounces of concentrate, while a 20-ounce drink contains 4 ounces. Which is stronger? Show unit rates.

Ways to Teach It
Mix colored water in 1:3 and 2:5 concentrate-to-water ratios, then measure one-cup samples and rank their strength.
Students answer the prompt, “Is 3 cups for 8 people equivalent to 6 cups for 15 people?” using a ratio table.
Run a card match with ratio tables, double number lines, unit rates, and equivalent situations, then have pairs explain each match.
Compare grocery prices per ounce, converting pounds to ounces when needed, and choose the better buy.
