What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students represent real situations with two equivalent ratios. They solve for a missing amount using a scale factor, unit rate, or equation, then interpret the answer in context.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students set up equivalent ratios with matching units in the same positions. They find the missing value, label it correctly, and check that the answer fits the situation.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may reverse one ratio but not the other, so the units do not line up. They may add the same amount instead of using a scale factor, or cross-multiply without understanding the quantities.
How to Assess It
- Give this exit ticket: “Five notebooks cost $12.50. At the same rate, what do eight notebooks cost? Show a proportion and label the answer.”

Ways to Teach It
Have students mix colored water using two cups of water for every three drops of color, then scale the mixture up.
Ask students to explain why 3 tickets for $12 and 5 tickets for $20 form equivalent ratios.
Set up proportion task cards around the room, and have pairs solve each card before checking the posted answer.
Give students grocery prices in different package sizes and ask them to use proportions to compare costs for equal amounts.
