What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students connect a part, a whole, and a percentage using ratios. They find missing values with equivalent ratios, tables, double number lines, or equations.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can find a missing part, whole, or percentage from two related quantities. They choose a useful model or equation, label the quantities, and check that the answer is reasonable.

Common Misconceptions

Students may use the part as the whole or reverse the two quantities in a ratio. They may treat 25% as 25 instead of 0.25 or 25 out of 100. Some find the correct percentage but forget to subtract a discount from the original price.

How to Assess It

Give this exit ticket: A club has 40 members, and 14 are sixth graders. What percentage are sixth graders? Show a ratio equation.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs 60 counters; they separate 15, then scale the part-to-whole ratio to an equivalent ratio out of 100.

  2. Students calculate 30% of 50 and 50% of 30, then write whether the results are always related and why.

  3. Run a card-matching game with percent problems, ratio equations, and solutions; teams explain each match before keeping it.

  4. Use a grocery ad to calculate discount amounts and final prices for three sale items, then check whether each answer is reasonable.
