What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students identify the original amount, percent, and changed amount in situations with discounts, tax, tips, markups, and percent change. They solve steps in the correct order and explain what each result means.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can find a sale price, then add tax or a tip without treating both percentages as the same step. The student labels amounts, estimates reasonableness, and rounds money correctly.

Common Misconceptions

Students often apply every percent to the original amount, even when the base changes after a discount or markup. They may use 20 instead of 0.20, forget tax after subtracting a discount, or divide percent change by the new amount.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: A $60 jacket is discounted 25%, then 6% sales tax is added. Find the final cost and show which amount is used to calculate the tax.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs price tags, discount cards, and tax cards. Students build a two-step purchase and calculate the final receipt.

  2. Ask, “Should 20% off followed by 20% tax return an item to its original price?” Students calculate, then defend their answer.

  3. Run a receipt relay where teams solve one step, pass the paper, and check the next teammate’s percent calculation.

  4. Compare two restaurant bills with different coupons and tip rates, then decide which option costs less and explain why.
