What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students calculate with fractions, decimals, and percents in financial situations. They choose the correct operations, track units, and explain whether each answer makes sense.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students correctly calculate discounts, taxes, tips, markups, commissions, and unit prices. They solve multistep problems, label money amounts, round to the nearest cent, and check whether results are reasonable.

Common Misconceptions

Students may treat 25% as 25 instead of 0.25, or subtract the discount rate without finding the discount amount. They may use the sale price instead of the original price as the percent base. Rounding too early can also change the final amount.

How to Assess It

Give this exit ticket: “A jacket costs $80, is discounted 25%, then taxed 7%. Find the final price and show each step.”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs store ads, play money, and a $150 budget; they select items and calculate discounts, tax, and remaining cash.

  2. Ask, “Is 20% off followed by 20% markup the original price?” Students calculate an example and defend their answer.

  3. Run a matching game where students pair financial scenarios with expressions, calculations, and correctly rounded answers.

  4. Have students compare two phone plans using monthly fees, data overage rates, taxes, and a six-month total.
