What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students use ratios, unit rates, proportions, and percent equations to solve money and business problems. They interpret results involving prices, discounts, markups, taxes, commissions, and other financial quantities.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students identify the relevant quantities, write a correct ratio, proportion, or percent equation, and solve with units. They check whether the result makes sense in the financial context.

Common Misconceptions

Students may add a percent instead of multiplying by a scale factor, or use the original price as the wrong base. They may reverse ratios, ignore units, or assume every relationship is proportional.

How to Assess It

Use this exit ticket: “A store buys a backpack for $24 and marks it up 35%. Find the selling price and show the proportion or equation used.”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs price tags, discount cards, and tax rates, then have them calculate final prices and verify each result with a calculator.

  2. Ask students to explain why a 20% discount followed by a 20% markup does not return an item to its original price.

  3. Run a matching game where students pair business situations with ratios, equations, unit rates, and correct solutions.

  4. Have students compare unit prices from two grocery ads and write a recommendation that accounts for package size and total cost.
