What Students Need to Do

Students use ratios, fractions, decimals, and equations to find a percent, a part, or a whole. They apply these methods to tax, tips, discounts, markups, and percent increase or decrease.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students find an unknown percent, part, or whole and explain how the quantities are related. They solve multistep problems with discounts, markups, tax, tips, and percent change, then check whether the result is reasonable.

Common Misconceptions

Students may use the percent as a whole number instead of converting it to a decimal or fraction. They may also confuse the original amount with the new amount in discount, tax, tip, and percent change problems.

How to Assess It

Give an exit ticket: “A $48 jacket is 25% off, then 6% sales tax is added. What is the final price? Show each step.”

   Set up a classroom store with price tags, discount cards, and tax rates, then have pairs calculate final costs with play money.
