What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students read shopping situations and decide whether to combine costs, compare amounts, or find change. They write money amounts as decimals, align decimal points, and show one or two calculation steps.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given a price list or receipt, students choose the correct operations and calculate accurately. They label answers with dollars and cents and check that the result makes sense.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may line up digits instead of decimal points, treating $4.50 as $4.05 or $4.5 as 45 cents. They may add when finding change, subtract prices when finding a total, or stop after the first step.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Mia has $10.00 and buys a notebook for $3.75 and a pen for $1.40. Write equations and find how much money remains.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs play money and three price cards; they choose two items, total the cost, pay with $20, and calculate change.
Ask when shoppers should add prices and when they should subtract, then have students defend answers using a sample receipt.
Run a receipt relay where teams solve cards requiring a total, a difference, or change, then check each answer with estimation.
Use a grocery advertisement to plan a meal under $25, calculate the total, and find the money left.
