What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students solve money stories by deciding when to add and when to subtract. They handle one or two steps and label whole-dollar answers with $ or coin amounts with ¢.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students choose addition or subtraction for each part of a money story and get an accurate answer. They show their steps and write $ before dollar amounts or ¢ after coin amounts.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may write ¢ before the number or place $ after it. They may combine dollars and cents in one problem, add every number, or stop after the first step.
How to Assess It
- Give this exit ticket: “Mia has 65¢, spends 28¢, then finds 10¢. How much does she have now? Show equations and label the answer.”

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs play coins and story cards, then have them model each problem and write matching equations with the ¢ symbol.
Ask students to explain in writing why a two-step money problem needs subtraction first and addition second.
Play Money Match by pairing problem cards with equation cards and answer cards, using separate rounds for dollars and coins.
Set up a classroom store with whole-dollar or coin prices, then have students calculate total cost or money left after purchases.
