What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students add the values of pennies, nickels, and dimes, and separately add one, five, and ten dollar bills. They choose ¢ for coin amounts and $ for bill amounts.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students count mixed groups accurately by starting with the greatest value. They write coin totals with ¢ and bill totals with $, including amounts such as 28¢ and $45.

Common Misconceptions

Students may count coins instead of adding their values. They may treat every coin as one cent, confuse nickels and dimes, or write $35 for 35¢.

How to Assess It

Give students a picture of two dimes, one nickel, and three pennies. Ask them to find the total and write it with the correct symbol.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs bags of play coins and bills, then have them sort, count, and label each total on an index card.

  2. Show 37¢ and ask students to draw two different coin combinations, then explain which combination uses fewer coins.

  3. Play a matching game where students pair coin or bill cards with total-value cards such as 42¢, 75¢, $30, and $65.

  4. Set up a class store with prices under $1 and whole-dollar prices, then have students build exact payments using play money.
