What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students read and show hour and half-hour times on analog and digital clocks. They identify common coins and dollar bills by appearance and value. They count combinations of money and state the total.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can match an analog clock to the correct digital time and set a clock to a given hour or half hour. The student names common coins and bills and states each value. The student accurately totals a mixed group and writes the amount with a dollar sign or cent sign.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may switch the jobs of the hour and minute hands or read the number under the minute hand as minutes. They may judge a coin by its size instead of its value. Some count the number of coins rather than adding their values, or combine dollars and cents incorrectly.
How to Assess It
- On an exit ticket, have students draw hands for 4:30 and write the total value of one $1 bill, two dimes, and three pennies.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs a teaching clock and play money, then have them build a called time and make a called amount.
Ask, “How are 3:00 and 3:30 different?” Have students explain what each clock hand shows.
Play matching-card memory with analog clocks, digital times, money pictures, and written values.
Set up a class snack shop with price tags and pickup times, then have students pay and read when each item is ready.
