What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students identify pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters by name and appearance. They write each value using the ¢ symbol and tell how many of one coin make a dollar.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students name pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters from either side. They write 1¢, 5¢, 10¢, and 25¢ correctly and know that 100 pennies, 20 nickels, 10 dimes, or 4 quarters equal one dollar.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think a larger coin is always worth more, so they value a nickel above a dime. They may confuse coin names or count four of every coin as one dollar. Some write ¢ before the number instead of writing 5¢ or 25¢.

How to Assess It

Give students an exit ticket with pictures of the four coins. Ask them to name each coin, write its value with ¢, and state how many make one dollar.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Sort mixed real or plastic coins into four cups, label each cup with its name and value, then build one-dollar groups.

  2. Ask, “How can you identify a coin without reading its name?” and have students cite size, color, edge, or picture.

  3. Play Coin Clue Bingo by calling a value or feature while students cover the matching penny, nickel, dime, or quarter.

  4. Set up a class snack stand where students match each coin to a same-value price tag and show which coins make one dollar.
