What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students read analog and digital clocks to the nearest five minutes and connect times to parts of the day. They count mixed coins and bills, then use addition and subtraction to solve purchase problems.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students read and write analog and digital times to the nearest five minutes and choose a.m. or p.m. correctly. They find coin or bill totals and solve one-step and two-step purchase problems.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may read the clock number as minutes, so the minute hand on 7 becomes 7 minutes instead of 35. They may assume larger coins are worth more or mix dollar and cent notation.
How to Assess It
- Give a two-item exit ticket: draw 4:25 on an analog clock, then find the total value of three dimes, two nickels, and four pennies.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs teaching clocks and coin sets; call a time and amount, then have students build both and record them.
Ask students to explain why the minute hand on 7 means 35 minutes, then compare two ways to make 65 cents.
Play Clock and Coin Match using cards that show analog clocks, digital times, coin groups, and written values.
Set up a class store with prices and opening times; students choose purchases, find totals, and identify when the store opens.
