What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students read and record time on analog and digital clocks, including a.m. and p.m. They solve one-step and two-step problems involving start time, end time, and elapsed minutes.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students accurately read and draw analog and digital times to the nearest minute. They find start times, end times, or elapsed times, including intervals that cross an hour.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may read the hour hand as the next hour when it sits between numbers. They may count clock numbers instead of five-minute intervals, or subtract times without regrouping across an hour.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Draw 3:47 p.m. on an analog clock, then find how many minutes pass from 3:47 p.m. to 4:25 p.m.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs movable clocks and time cards, then have one student build each time while the other checks the hands.
Ask students to explain two ways to find the elapsed time from 8:48 a.m. to 9:23 a.m.
Play elapsed-time bingo using start and end time clues, with students covering the matching number of minutes.
Give students a school-day schedule and ask them to calculate the length of lunch, recess, and one class period.
