What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students find start times, end times, or elapsed times in real-world situations. They add and subtract money amounts in one-step and two-step problems, then label answers with the correct units.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can find an unknown start time, end time, or elapsed time across an hour. The student can calculate totals and change, use decimal notation correctly, and explain each operation.

Common Misconceptions

Students may treat 1 hour as 100 minutes or write 3:75 instead of 4:15. They may misalign decimal points in money amounts or forget to regroup across a dollar. Some stop after one calculation in a two-step problem.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: “A movie starts at 2:47 p.m. and lasts 1 hour 38 minutes. A ticket costs $8.75 and popcorn costs $4.60. If you pay with $20, when does the movie end and how much change should you receive?”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs play money and geared clocks, then have them model a purchase, make change, and advance the clock by a stated duration.

  2. Ask students to write why 3:45 plus 30 minutes is not 3:75, then share two correct methods.

  3. Play Time and Change Relay: teams draw task cards, solve on mini whiteboards, and earn a point after explaining their units.

  4. Use a store flyer and bus timetable; students plan a shopping trip and calculate total cost, change, departure time, and arrival time.
