What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division to work through one-step and multi-step money situations. They calculate totals, compare costs, and find change using decimal notation.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students choose the needed operations, organize each step, and calculate accurately with dollars and cents. They label answers with a dollar sign and check that totals and change are reasonable.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may line up digits instead of decimal points when adding or subtracting. They may read $3.05 as $3.50, forget to multiply for repeated items, or round before finishing the calculation.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Mia buys three notebooks at $2.45 each and pays with $10. How much change should she receive? Show your steps.

Ways to Teach It
Set up a class store with price tags and play money; students choose items, find totals, pay, and verify change.
Ask students to explain two ways to find the change from $20 after buying items costing $6.75 and $4.80.
Play Budget Challenge: teams select item cards without exceeding $25, then calculate their total and remaining money.
Give students two grocery ads and a shopping list; they calculate each store's total and decide which store costs less.
