What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students read clock faces and digital displays by tracking the hour and counting minutes around the dial. They record exact times and choose a.m. or p.m. from context.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student correctly reads a time such as 7:43 on both analog and digital clocks. The student chooses a.m. for a morning event and p.m. for an afternoon or evening event.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat each clock number as one minute instead of five minutes. They may name the next hour when the hour hand is close to it. They often confuse a.m. and p.m., especially around noon and midnight.
How to Assess It
- Set a teaching clock to 4:38 and say, “Soccer practice starts at this time after school. Write the digital time with a.m. or p.m.”

Ways to Teach It
Pairs use geared teaching clocks to build five times from cards, then write each time digitally with a.m. or p.m.
Ask, “Would 12:05 be a.m. or p.m. for lunch? Defend your answer using noon and midnight.”
Play Clock Match: students pair analog clock cards with digital time cards and context cards before a two-minute timer ends.
Give a one-day bus schedule; students label each departure a.m. or p.m. and draw one departure on an analog clock.
