What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students connect minute-hand positions to counting by fives and match clock faces to digital times. They describe times with a.m. or p.m. and use half-hour and quarter-hour language correctly.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student accurately reads and draws mixed clock times, then writes matching digital forms. The student uses a.m. and p.m. logically and translates quarter-hour and half-hour phrases without changing the hour incorrectly.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may read the minute hand on 8 as 8 minutes instead of 40 minutes. They may place the hour hand directly on a number when the time is partway through the hour. Some confuse a.m. with p.m. or describe 8:45 as quarter after 8 instead of quarter till 9.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Show 7:15, 2:30, and 8:45 on blank clocks, write each digitally and in words, then label breakfast time a.m. or p.m.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs geared clocks and digital time cards; partners build each time, check the hour hand, and name it in words.
Ask, "Is 7:45 quarter after 7 or quarter till 8?" Students defend answers using both hands on a clock.
Play time bingo with boards of digital times while calling analog displays, a.m. or p.m. clues, and quarter-hour phrases.
Create a class-day timeline with arrival, lunch, and dismissal shown on analog clocks, digitally, and with matching time phrases.
