What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students decide whether a story involves putting groups together or taking objects away. They use counters, drawings, or number sentences to show their thinking and answer.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student models the action, finds the correct answer, and writes a matching equation. They can explain what each number and symbol represents in the story.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may count all the objects in a take-away story instead of counting what remains. They may confuse plus and minus signs or write numbers in an order that does not match the action.
How to Assess It
- Give this exit ticket: “Leo has 4 blocks and gets 3 more. Draw what happens, write an equation, and find the total.”

Read joining and take-away story cards, then have students act them out with counters on ten-frames.
Ask, “How does your drawing show what happened in the story?” Have partners explain each part of their models.
