What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students decide whether a story problem involves joining, separating, or comparing quantities. They model it with counters, a drawing, or an equation and find the unknown.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student solves addition stories with totals to 20 and subtraction stories using related facts. The model matches the story, and the equation shows the unknown correctly.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may add whenever they see “more” or subtract whenever they see “left,” without following the action in the story. They may reverse subtraction numbers, count objects twice, or write an equation that does not match their model.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: “There are 8 birds on a fence. Five more land. How many birds are there now?” Ask students to draw a model and write an equation.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs 20 counters and story cards; students act out each story, solve it, and record an equation.
Ask, “How does your drawing show what changed in the story?” Students explain to a partner, then write one sentence.
Play Match Three with cards showing a story, a picture, and an equation; students collect sets that represent the same problem.
Set up a classroom snack count where students find how many crackers are added, eaten, or remain, then record equations.
