What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students solve addition facts within 20 and use known sums to solve related subtraction facts. They apply a dependable strategy and record accurate equations.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students solve facts within 20 accurately using counters, drawings, counting on, or known facts. They use one addition fact to solve both related subtraction facts.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may count the first addend again instead of counting on. They may subtract in the wrong order or fail to connect a subtraction fact to its matching addition fact.
How to Assess It
- Give an exit ticket: Solve 9 + 6, then use that fact to solve 15 − 9 and 15 − 6. Ask students to show one strategy.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs two-color counters to build sums within 20, separate each total in two ways, and record the matching addition and subtraction equations.
Ask, “How can 8 + 7 help you solve 15 − 8?” Have students draw and explain their thinking.
Play Fact Family Match with cards showing an addition equation, its sum, and two related subtraction equations.
Set up a snack shop with prices from 1 to 10 cents. Students buy two items, total the cost, and find change from 20 cents.
