What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students recall addition facts with totals no greater than 10. They also recall the matching subtraction facts quickly, without counting one by one.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students answer mixed addition and subtraction facts within 10 quickly and correctly. They use a known addition fact to recall related subtraction facts without counting each time.

Common Misconceptions

Students may count every object or finger instead of recalling a fact. They may switch subtraction numbers, or miss how addition and subtraction facts belong to one fact family.

How to Assess It

Give a one-minute exit ticket with eight mixed facts, such as 4 + 5, 9 - 4, 3 + 6, and 10 - 7. Check accuracy and quick recall without counting tools.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs ten-frames and counters, then have them build a fact and remove the counters before answering from memory.

  2. Ask students to explain how knowing 3 + 6 = 9 helps them solve 9 - 6.

  3. Play fact-family memory with cards showing equations and matching number-family triangles.

  4. Set up a classroom store where students add small item totals and find how many remain from 10 coins.
