What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students connect addition and subtraction as opposite operations. They use the same total and two parts to write related equations and solve missing-number problems.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students use a known addition fact to solve a related subtraction problem, and vice versa. They correctly identify the total and the two parts in equations, drawings, and word problems.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think addition and subtraction facts are unrelated. They may reverse subtraction facts, claiming that 3 minus 7 equals 4 because 7 minus 3 equals 4. Some use the total as a part when writing a fact family.

How to Assess It

Give students 5 + 3 = 8. Ask them to write two related subtraction equations and draw a picture showing how all three equations connect.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs eight counters, have them split the counters into two groups, then write two addition and two subtraction equations.

  2. Ask, “How does 4 + 3 = 7 help you solve 7 minus 4?” Students explain with words and a drawing.

  3. Play a fact-family triangle game where students use three number cards to say or write all related addition and subtraction facts.

  4. Tell a story about six apples with two eaten, then connect 6 minus 2 and 4 plus 2 using counters.
