What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students compare the values on both sides of an equal sign. They use addition and subtraction facts to decide if equations are true and find missing numbers.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students decide whether addition and subtraction equations are true or false by comparing both sides. They find missing numbers in different positions and explain that the equal sign shows equal values.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think the equal sign means “write the answer next” instead of “has the same value.” They may add every number shown or struggle when the unknown appears before the equal sign.

How to Assess It

Give students: 8 + 5 = 9 + __ and 14 − __ = 6. Ask them to fill each blank and explain how they know both sides are equal.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs a balance mat, counters, and number cards to build two different expressions with the same value.

  2. Ask students to explain why 7 + 4 = 6 + 5 is true without solving both sides in the usual order.

  3. Play Equation Match by having students pair cards such as 12 − 3, 4 + 5, and 9.

  4. Use a class store problem: Mia spends $6 and $3, while Leo spends $5 and $4; compare their totals.
