What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students treat the equals sign as a statement that two expressions have the same value. They use whole-number operations to test equations and find missing values.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can evaluate both sides of an equation and decide whether it is true or false. They can find a missing whole number in any position and explain how both sides remain equal.

Common Misconceptions

Students may read the equals sign as “the answer comes next” instead of “both sides have the same value.” They may solve only one side, ignore operation order, or assume the unknown must appear after the equals sign.

How to Assess It

Give an exit ticket with 36 − 8 = 7 × 4, 9 + □ = 3 × 5, and 42 = 42. Students label each equation true or false, find the unknown, and explain one answer.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Use a balance scale and linking cubes to model 8 + 4 = 6 + 6, then build two more balanced equations.

  2. Ask, “Is 24 ÷ 6 = 2 + 2 true? Explain without solving only one side.”

  3. Play an equation sort: students classify cards as true, false, or incomplete, then revise every false equation to make it true.

  4. Compare two classroom supply orders with whole-dollar prices, then write an equation showing whether the total costs are equal.
