What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students evaluate multi-step expressions using grouping symbols and operation rules. They compare values on both sides of an equation and identify expressions that have the same value.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student evaluates a multi-step expression accurately and explains which operation comes first. The student compares both sides of an equation and identifies different expressions with the same value.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat the equals sign as a signal that an answer comes next. They may work strictly left to right or add before multiplying. They may think expressions that look different cannot have the same value.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Evaluate 18 − 3 × 4 + 6, then decide whether 18 − 3 × 4 + 6 = 3 × 4 is true and explain.

Ways to Teach It
Use number and operation cards to build two expressions with the same value, then verify both with counters or a calculator.
Students respond to the prompt, “Does the equals sign mean the answer comes next?” using 8 + 4 = 6 + 6 as evidence.
Play expression match by pairing cards such as 6 × (5 + 2) and 42, with students explaining the order used.
Compare two checkout receipts with quantities, discounts, and fees, then write and evaluate expressions to decide whether the totals are equal.
