What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students turn story situations into equations with a letter or box for the missing whole number. They place the unknown where the situation requires, then solve using operation relationships.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students write an equation that matches the quantities and their relationship. They solve accurately and check that the answer makes sense in the original situation.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may always place the unknown after the equals sign. They may reverse subtraction or division, or choose an operation from a keyword without checking the situation.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: “A library had some books. After 36 were checked out, 128 remained. Write an equation and find the starting number.”

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs counters, operation cards, and blank equation mats; students model a situation, place the unknown, and solve.
Ask students to compare □ − 18 = 25 and 43 − □ = 25, then write why the unknowns differ.
Play Equation Match: students pair story cards with equation cards, solve each unknown, and justify matches to a partner.
Use a classroom supply order with totals, quantities, and prices; students write equations to find a missing quantity or cost.
